I just received an email from a reader who wanted me to rate the sexuality of my books, which, of course, I can't do since that's subjective. Turns out that my books are a little too spicy for her, which makes me smile because--some of the explicit books my peers are writing--Holy Cow! Way too much for me. So let's talk... What level of sensuality and sexuality do you like in your romances? ... See MoreSee Less

Your books are pretty low on the Sizzle Scale. I think this reader would do better with Dick and Jane. Or is the name Dick going to send her over the edge?
Depends on the story but if the characters fall in love, you would hope they have good sex. Don't need the explicit detail so much - for instance, there was this one author who talked about the woman's folds so much and so often all I could think of was doing Origami.
I read most levels of romance even those that are classified as erotica. Maybe I’m jaded, but I think the sex depicted in your novels are on the same level found in most romance novels….and I love them. She is definitely looking for the Hallmark Channel version of romance.
As long as it’s a well written book, the more sensual the better. I don’t blush at anything.
Agree that your books are perfect and I've enjoyed them all! I've found that as I've gotten older, I've gotten more selective about what I read. So I skim or skip parts I don't enjoy.....
Whatever is right for that story! Even the spicy scenes get very "meh" if there's no real point to them.
I enjoy the spice. I’m so annoyed with a book labeled as romance and the most a couple does is kiss. lol If I want that level, I’ll reach for a YA novel.
That's hilarious š! If your books are too spicy then she needs to be reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and others along that line!!! I just read the new Susan Mallery book and oh my! The lady would never make it through The Boardwalk Bookshop!
I think your books are just right with the amount of sexuality. I do read books with more, but I enjoy your amount best. You are one of the writers that I don’t read reviews. I buy whatever you write.
i love the level of sensuality/sexuality in your books because it feel genuine, intimate, and sincere for the characters. I really appreciate that you take your time to cultivate relationships and it feels like the natural next steps on their journey. You keep doing you girl!!!!!!
IMO, your books have the right amount of sexuality & sensuality in them!! ā¤ļøā¤ļø
As an author of mostly sweet/Christian romance I get this a lot too on my books that aren’t in the Christian sub genre. It’s a hard line!
Honestly I skip a ton of scenes in the spicier books...it can get boring if there are too many.
I like your style of writing, completely. Yes, I am older but not dead!
I don’t mind a bit more explicit scenes as long as the wording isn’t vulgar. Your books are really tasteful, Julia Quinn, and Eloise James are really well done. I’m more into the intensity of the scene then crude language.
Wow! š„ spicey is the way of life. I like a sensual book but I also like heart warming and historical and an honest autobiography. But Susan Elizabeth Phillip's books being considered erotica racey, like, "50 Shades of Grey," I dont think so. She needs to stick to her Good Housekeeping. š¤š¤ššš¤£š¤£
It’s about the story and the writing! Yours are so solid that any level of spicyness is just right!
Sizzle isn't as important to me as it used to be. I used to read as much for sizzle as story. Some authors write sizzle so much better than others. You write it well.
I feel like your books get less spicy as we all grow older—-err wiser. I read yours for the characters and the heart racing romance. Truthfully I feel terrible that you spend 2-3 years on masterpieces that I consume in 7 hours!
If it makes sense for the characters, bring on the heat. But I hate the “let me initiate you into my naughty ways” trope and I dislike unnecessary description of body parts. The mechanics of lovemaking are far less interesting than the emotional impact of it. You do a beautiful job in that department.
Your books are perfect - and the sexuality always adds to the relationships of the characters - thank you for the sizzle !! āļøāļø
I like all the levels—just depends on the author—I read by mood for an author—if I want something funny and heartfelt I go for you—if I want something dark—I go to a different author—it’s a mood thing for me
I care more about good writing. If a book is well-written, the level of sensuality and sexuality doesn't matter much to me.
I read mostly in the living room where my adult son's are so I don't like too spicy. But for a good story I'll go to bed early to read.
Some have not aged well not the sexuality but the way women are treated
I'm currently reading and enjoying Jojo Moyes The Giver of Stars about the horseback librarians. What are you reading? ... See MoreSee Less
I’m rereading the Wynette, Texas series. It’s so much fun to reengage with these wonderful characters again. A very happy reading-weekend, indeed. Thanks !!!
Just finished reading Breathing Room by SEP again. I had forgotten how much I loved this book. I also read Nightwork by Nora Roberts and enjoyed it.
Also good, same topic is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richard.
Natural Born Charmer for the second time. I'm rereading the whole Chicago Stars series.
Loved ‘The Giver of Stars’. Better than Crawdads for my money. Just finished ‘The Body Falls’ by Andrea Carter - book number 5 in her Inishowen series. Loved the vivid descriptions of the countryside and can’t help reading it in an Irish accent. Onto Dervla McTeirnan’s newest ‘The Murder Rules’ by audiobook now.
"A Walk Along the Beach" by Debbie Macomber... she wrote it after losing her close friend to cancer. One of the characters battles leukemia.
I LOVED The Giver of Stars. I listened to it on Audible and it was fantastic. I'm currently reading The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews. It's good!
Just finished reading Where the Crawdads Sing for the second time in anticipation of the movie release in July. Outstanding book. Hope the movie lives up to it.
Just finished Remarkably Bright Creatures š by Shelby Van Pelt -- such a delightful book. š
Found an old paperback to take to the pool - Patti Berg, Born to be Wild ! Read it years ago and enjoying both reread and the fact it is a book and not on kindle !
Re-reading The passage by Justin Cronin at the moment. I never got around to the third book, so that's my summer reading plan.
That book was AMAZING! I had no idea about the packhorse library programs. What an incredible part of history. I just finished Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Wow. A tough read in many ways…but I couldn’t put it down.
I love Jojo Moyes. I’m listening to a lot of Robyn Carr audiobooks as I purge all the things that aren’t bringing me joy inside my house.
Just finished Sound of Darkness by Heather Graham...and going to start A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong..
I am reading Things we Never Get Over, by Lucy Score. Fun fun read. Reminds me of a SEP novel...full of laughter and lots of sassy-ness and fun characters.
I'm trying to get through Nora Roberts Nightwork, sadly the Tarot reading which spoilers the whole story line made it utterly uninteresting for me. As I normally adore her character development and interactions I try to get through, but might end up to put it aside for a few years until I forgot abiut that scene - I already marked it in the book and wrote not to read it when revisiting.
I am reading a JD Robb book. But Giver of Stars and The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek are both on my list to read. I Read an article by Barbara Delinsky comparing the 2 books.
Loved that book. Have to pick a new one, thinking Beautiful Little Fools, by Jillian Cantor
Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series #5. A Dying Fall. Great series.
Just starting the next book in Kate Quinn's Rome series, Lady of the Eternal City
I have been enthralled with Louise Penny and Chief Inspector Gamache. I am currently reading book 14 - Kingdom Of the Blind.
Started a re-read of the Tony Hillerman series of Leaphorn & Chee.
Thank you for sharing this! I’m reading and enjoying The Boardwalk Bookshop by Susan Mallery.
Our AAUW Book Club read The Giver of Stars and The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek and compared the two. Fun with lots of discussion.
I just finished A Stranger in the Lifeboat by Mitch Albom. Such a beautifully written book. I am listening to The Boardwalk Bookstore by Susan Mallery. I just started it but am really enjoying it.
